Glucobay is prescribed to manage blood sugar levels in individuals with non-insulin dependent diabetes (type 2 diabetes). It functions by inhibiting the activity of specific enzymes in the intestines (such as sucrose) that are responsible for digesting food and releasing sugars into the bloodstream. By delaying the digestive process, Glucobay aids in preventing spikes in blood sugar levels following meals.
Always adhere to the guidance provided by your doctor when using Glucobay (Acarbose) tablets. These tablets should be taken with the first bite of each main meal. Your doctor may recommend a starting dose of 25mg three times daily; however, this dosage may be modified, and a maintenance dose ranging from 50 mg to 100 mg (taken three times a day) could be prescribed.
Potential side effects include nausea, vomiting, gas, abdominal pain, and digestive issues.
If you have, or have ever had, cirrhosis, ketoacidosis, or any intestinal disorders, you must inform your doctor prior to taking Glucobay.
While Glucobay does not directly cause hypoglycemia, there is a risk of this occurring if you are prescribed this medication alongside other diabetes treatments.
In case of an allergic reaction, seek emergency medical assistance immediately. Symptoms to be aware of that may indicate a reaction include skin rashes, hives, swelling of the face or extremities, difficulty breathing, and difficulty swallowing.
